Editorial: Be respectful while cheering
By: Jordan Young, senior
For the Editorial Board
Sportsmanship is a concept that needs to be practiced within
every school. The meaning of sportsmanship is to show courtesy to the other
teams’ fans and the teams themselves.
However, this concept can be difficult to practice at times. Many fans may
cheer with respect, but just one out of control fan can affect everyone at
the game. So it is important, as fans, to try to remain sportsmanlike for
the benefit of the team.
Humboldt has experienced some bad confrontations with rival teams. During
these games, some fans, even coaches, have been ejected for their reactions
to opposing fans’ comments.
The hope is that confrontations like these will not happen again at sporting
events, and both sides of every sporting event will display sportsmanlike
qualities. If not, the quality of the game can be affected.
Sportsmanship is not just an issue for high school
level players and fans. Often, fans and athletes on the college and professional
levels
lack sportsmanship.
In college, some schools’ fans tear down goal posts after an upset
victory. The University of Duke’s basketball fans have been nicknamed
the ‘Cameron Crazies’ for their bizarre behavior.
Even professional games can get out of hand. There was a very bad brawl between
the Indiana Pacers and the Detroit Pistons last fall, for example.
Fans at all levels of competition, on some occurrences, have been ejected
from games for throwing items onto the playing surface.
Some fans’ emotions can get out of hand, but most are well mannered;
this keeps most games in order. There are security guards at major colleges
and professional sporting events that keep peace inside and outside of the
stadium.
All in all, sportsmanship is an asset needed at all sporting events. Even
though it may be tempting to stoop to a low level when other schools come
in and are rude, Humboldt fans should not respond negatively. That does not
mean fans should be quiet and involved. Instead, they should cheer on the
Cubs and show respect to everyone at the game.
Attending games; great way to spend nights

Nowadays, sports seem just as important to most students as
their academics are. However, sports would not mean as much if it were not
for all the students and fans that come to watch the games and cheer on the
players.
Coming to the basketball games can give both students and their families
something to do to get out of the house. It is a great form of entertainment.
Anyone who wants to can and should go to the games when they have the chance.
It is a lot better than staying at home if there is nothing to do there.
If no one showed up at the games, the teams would probably not put forth
as much effort to win as they might if the whole gym was packed with fans
that wanted them to win.

Attending the games shows support for the teams and school.
Cheering them on can help get them pumped up and inspire them to play hard
and to win.
The crowd and everyone in attendance for the game should work together to
keep the teams’ spirit up, no matter how they are doing. If they are
winning in a runaway game or losing by several points, they still like to
know that fans support them no matter what.
There are other reasons to go other than just to watch the game. One of the
other reasons is to hang out with friends and to socialize.
The money fans pay to get in, which is only a few dollars, can go toward
benefiting the school and the school’s teams.
Season passes are also
available, so families can pay a flat fee at the beginning of the season
and then get into all the home games with that pass.
Going to watch the basketball games can also help keep a lot of kids out
of trouble. They would be watching the game instead of going out to parties
or getting into things they should not be around.
Attending away games also shows school spirit. Students and families can
enjoy going on the road to support the teams in another environment. Althletes
appreciate the extra cheering while playing at a different school.
Everyone who does not have any plans on game days, such as tonight, should
attend the school’s basketball games to show their school spirit and
to help cheer on the Cubs and Lady Cubs to a winning season.
Clubs, organizations
show school spirit (Con)

Currently, there are so many extracurricular activities
that are offered to the students both within and outside of the school
that there is little time left for anything else. The students’ schedules
are full. They are so busy participating in their many clubs and organizations
that they may not even find a chance to attend a single basketball game.
This lack of attendance is by no means meant to be hurtful. It is not at
all intentionally meant to be degrading or insulting toward the team. Simply
because these students do not come to every athletic game does not automatically
mean that they have no school spirit. In fact, the people who are unable
to attend the games may sometimes show more school spirit than those who
never miss a game. This is because school spirit is not measured according
to the number of athletic events a student decides to go to. Often, the
students are not at all at fault for their inability to attend. These students
simply have prior commitments that they have already promised their time
to.

The
students that do not attend every athletic event can easily show their
support of the school using other methods. Students can show school pride
by participating in other activities. They can earn respect for the school
by doing their best. Students can just as easily show their enthusiasm
for their school through academics. Actively participating in such clubs
and organizations as StuCo, FCCLA, and FFA provides ample opportunity for
students to represent their school to the best of their ability. Such activities
give teens the chance to gain leadership skills and get excited about their
school, qualities that can be achieved anywhere and are sometimes mistakenly
narrowed solely to athletics.
Throughout the school and even outside of it, there are limitless opportunities
for students to get involved. No matter what a student’s interests
and hobbies are, there is certainly a club or organization that they can
take part in. Whether it is athletics, academics, or even social events,
students can show their love for the school through their participation.
By expressing their eagerness to take part in the many activities, students
can portray their school spirit with or without the attendance of a basketball
game.
Column: Loud gymnasium energizes
athletes at all games

I think that Humboldt basketball fans should go to more than
just the home games, because when they do, it shows that they do not have
all the faith they should in our teams.
Basketball players love it when kids from school and their parents go to
the games to support them, just as they did for the football players and
other sports teams. Even when it was cold outside, everyone still sat and
cheered for them to win.
I, as a player, personally like it a lot when parents and fans go to all
the games possible because it shows that they have faith in our team and
that they support us whether or not we win or lose. It usually gets me and
the other players pumped up at games when everyone is cheering very loudly,
whether we are winning or losing.
When people are at the game and cheering loudly no matter what is going on,
it makes us want to try harder to win for everybody, including us and our
coaches, because we do not want the game to be a waste of time. We do not
want fans to pay admission for a game that we do not play our best at. Cheering
fans give us more confidence to play better.
The band always makes a big difference when they play at home games because
they are always the crazy ones with a lot of school spirit. They are always
playing the songs that get most of us pumped and ready to play, both before
the game and during halftime. Their music also helps the other fans get more
involved in the game. The band always cheers loudly and keeps us from getting
down during games.
The mascot, when we have one, also puts us in a good mood because we like
to watch whoever is in the outfit run around and act stupid. It is great
how it can get the crowd cheering and loud during a game.
Before games I mostly listen to my CD player while we get dressed because
music gets me excited to play. Most of the other players listen to music
as well, and it usually works to get us pumped up and ready to hopefully
beat whoever we play.
Once the game gets started, however, we cannot rely on our CDs to keep us
energized. We then have to draw energy from the crowd.
I hope that everyone packs the gym at our game tonight. We always appreciate
a big showing at our first home game.
I also hope everyone continues to go to all of the following games to cheer
us on, both here and away, for the rest of the season.
