For the past week, February 20 through the 24, the Humboldt FFA has been sponsoring FFA Week. In response to this special week, radio ads have been run on KINZ and KIKS radio stations.

“ Getting out of school to record radio ads was awesome. We got to see all of the high tech stuff at KIKS and KINZ. My recording was probably not as good as everyone else’s, and it took me a few tries to get it down, but it was still fun,” said Sarah Works, so.

On Monday, students were treated to a steak dinner and an elementary school project was held. Select FFA members gave kindergarten through second grade students coloring books. Third through fifth grade students had a drawing contest to see who could draw the best and most creative farm scenes.

Tuesday, the Barn Yard Olympics were held for the Ag students outside the tech building. FFA students who chose to participate played games such as sack racing, hay bale hurdles, and cow patty shot put. Winners of the Barn Yard Olympics were Derek Wrestler, sr., with first place, Joab Barr, so., with second place, and Kristin North, sr., with third place.

I think I am going to make it.

February 21. Other National FFA Week events included a steak feed on Monday, a faculty
breakfast on Wednesday, a school wide Career Day on Thursday, and today is Chapter T-Shirt Day.

“ The Barnd Yard Olympics were great. It was so fun to watch everyone participate in all the games,” said Works.

On Wednesday, the FFA students hosted a faculty breakfast in the morning, and there was a fun night for the FFA students that evening. Students received pizza to eat and watched movies.

“ Cooking the breakfast was fun, even though it was early in the morning,” said Jordan Young, sr. “All the teachers seemed to like the food we made for them. The fun night was also a lot of fun because I was in charge of what we did.”

For Thursday, February 23, FFA students were in charge of Career Day, which involved the entire high school. From 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., employers from various fields came to speak about the types of careers available to students.

Today is Chapter T-Shirt Day. All FFA students were to wear their FFA shirts to school.

News Briefs
Study break relieves winter grind, stress

High School students enjoyed a fun day on Valentines’ Day this year with Study Break 2006. The school allowed students to choose between two movies and karaoke. Treats were also provided for students.

“ I thought this would be a good idea for two reasons,” said K.B. Criss, high school principal. “First, our teachers and students have been working extremely hard both preparing for tests and in normal classroom activities. Second, from winter break until spring break is a long time without many days out. I call it the ‘winter grind,’ and I wanted to break up that grind.”

Some students got into the Valentines’ Spirit by watching Just Like Heaven. Once the movie was over, students were able to talk and play Catch Phrase.

“ I chose the movie because it was a chick flick, and I’m a chick,” said Sam Kerns, jr. “I found it funny that Dustin Corban [jr.] and Anthony Sweeney [sr.] were the only guys in there.”

The other movie offered was Flightplan. Once the movie ended, students were able to sit with friends and talk.

“ I went to the movie because I thought it would be good,” said Alana Heisler, so. “I did not really enjoy the movie, but I did enjoy the break.”

A large group of students spent the afternoon in the auditorium. Several students showed off their singing talents with karaoke provided by Airwave Productions. A few students even serenaded others in attendance.

“ I got on stage to sing because I thought it would be fun to get up there in front of people,” said Channing Stirewalt, fr.
At 3 p.m., all students went to the gym for flower deliveries and an early dismissal.

Forensics travels to Gardner, fails to break into final round

Led by sponsor Gracie Newman, the Humboldt High forensics team traveled to Gardner Edgerton on February 18. Sophomores Tessa Coronado and Daniel Weilert, as well as freshman Todd Hauser, were the only team members to compete in the event.

Weilert and Coronado competed in IDA (Improvised Duet Acting) together for the meet. Coronado also performed a Prose piece taken from a selection of The Chronicles of Narnia; The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. Hauser performed a poetry piece. Unfortunately, no one from the team broke finals.

“ At the next meet, I think that everyone will do their best to compete at a higher quality level,” said Weilert.

The next event for the forensics team will be the League meet that will be held in Caney Valley on March 4.
