It just shows where we are at right now and how much we have to improve before
the season starts.”

Season ends at Regionals

Even though Scholars’ Bowl is now over for this season,
the team is going out with a positive outlook after their last competition
at Eureka on February 2.
“
Regionals could have gone better; we all wanted a better outcome. All we
needed to move onto the final round was to get second in our pool, but instead
we placed third,” said Hailey Schoendaller, Scholars’ Bowl coach.
At Regionals, Humboldt competed in seven rounds; five out of seven of those
rounds were won.
“
I was happy that they placed at two separate meets, including the fact that
the team placed third at the league meet,” said Schoendaller.
Round two was won by Humboldt with a lead of 10 points over Central Heights,
ending it with a score of 30-20. In rounds four and six against Jayhawk-Linn
and Fredonia, respectively, each ended with a winning score of 60-40.
During round seven, the team lost 40-60 against Eureka. However, they soon
redeemed themselves with a win during round 10, scoring 60-30 against Galena.
After losing with a score of 30-60 against Burlington in round 11, the team
climbed back up with another victory. In round 14, they scored 60-50 against
Cherokee South East.
Leading scorer for the team was Katie Hauser, jr., with 19 points. Daniel
Weilert, so., was next in line with six points, while Emily Hauser, so.,
came in with five, Todd Hauser, fr., with three, and Paul Vernon, sr., with
one.

Serious solo qualifies one for State
By Jesse Lundine, sr.

Forensics students competed in Eureka for a tournament on
February 4, with one member ranking high enough to compete at state level.
Blair Umholtz, sr., and Chelsy Wright, jr., received third place for their
duet, entitled ‘The Boy Book’ by John C. Havens. Wright also
received third when competing in the prose category with her piece ‘Clutter
Management 101.’
Umholtz received first on her serious solo, ‘Multiple Personality Murder’ by
Deborah Karczewski.
By taking first, Umholtz received an invitation to State competition, which
will be held during the first week in May.
“
I could not believe it, I did not at all expect to get first for my serious
solo,” said Umholtz. “But I am excited and can not wait until
State. I love performing my serious solo. I am able to lose myself in the
character that I am trying to portray,” said Umholtz.
Other members competing in the meet were Tessa Coronado, so., Jason Kaufman,
jr., and Todd Hauser, fr. Coronado performed a poetry piece, while Kaufman
and Hauser teamed up to participate in improvised duet acting (IDA).
IDA is when two participants randomly choose three settings, characters,
and events out of a closed container. From there, the two participants select
one setting and event, as well as two characters.
Then, using that information, the partners create a story line to act out
in front of their judges. The IDA pieces that they construct from sheer imagination
and original thought can range from dead serious to hysterically comical.
The piece Kaufman and Hauser chose to put together was comical at this particular
meet.
Kaufman also participated in prose with his piece being ‘Life’s
Grind.’
“
I am very proud of our team thus far,” said Gracie Newman, forensics
coach. “They are coming along nicely and getting in a lot of good practice
for State competition.”
The team’s next tournament will be held at Gardner Edgerton on February
18. Those participating thus far are Coronado and Hauser. All forensics team
members are encouraged to sign up for the Gardner Edgerton tournament.
Practice will continue throughout the season on every Wednesday after school
until approximately 5:30 p.m. for each upcoming meet.

She has no idea what’s about
to happen.
Seniors Adam Headley and Sarah Riebel were crowned
the Sweetheart King and Queen during halftime
of the varsity boys’ game on January 27. “I
felt great when our names were announced, and then everyone
cheered for
us. I actually felt like a queen,” said Riebel. Just moments after
their names were announced,
Headley and Riebel revived and old tradition. “I
was proud of myself when I got to kiss the queen in front
of all those
people,” said Headley. “WOO!”
