Prom Night Makes Memories
Students reflect on events leading to the big night

Many juniors and seniors, along with their dates, enjoyed a faux trip to Paris for prom this year. The theme was ‘Here’s to the Night’ and Grand March started next to a 17-foot Eiffel Tower.

The junior class worked from the beginning of the year on prom. They sold magazines to raise money and then had to divide into committees to iron out all the details. After all of the decisions had been made, juniors started setting up for prom. During spring break and the week before prom, juniors worked on setting up, from constructing Grand March to setting up the lobby, to even something as simple as making punch.

“Worknights for prom were a lot of fun. We always made each other laugh so we would not think of it as work,” said Michaela Myer, jr. “The funniest moment was making the punch. We left Dustin [Corban, jr.] and Josh [Gillespie, jr.] in charge of that because we did not think they could mess that up. However, when only half a cup of sugar goes in instead of four cups, it does not come out quite right. But Mrs. [Dorothy] Neely came to the rescue and fixed it.”

Students and their dates who attended prom had to make their own preparations. Dresses were purchased or made, tuxes were rented, flowers were ordered, hair appointments were set, dinner plans were finalized, and other tiny details were set right.

When prom finally arrived, students and their dates first enjoyed dinner out with friends or just as a couple. Some chose to eat the night before, some the night of prom, but no matter what, it was a time to be remembered.

“Prom dinner was fun because I was with friends,” said Janelle Herder, jr.

On Saturday, prom attendees were able to get all dressed up for a night of dancing and fun. First, though, they had to get ready, including hair, makeup, dresses, tuxes, and flowers. Then dates had to be picked up, and the picture taking started.

“Getting ready for prom… I have somewhat of an idea of what it was like for the girls,” said Paul Vernon, sr. “My sisters talked about it constantly in high school. Some things change, but the fun is all the same.”

Once couples arrived at the school, Gretchen’s Family Photography was on hand to take their pictures. Many families came with cameras to capture even more pictures of couples and friends. Then the waiting for Grand March began. Juniors led the march, followed by seniors. Over forty couples strutted their stuff in front of a packed gym. This year, the juniors arranged Grand March so that both sides of the gym were open for seating.

“Everything came together smoothly and Grand March went really well,” said Chelsy Wright, jr. “The gym seemed a lot less crowded with both sides open this year.”

After Grand March was completed, pictures continued. Some couples escaped to the lobby to wait until the dance began. Punch girls Alana Heisler and Britany Sellman, sos., began their serving duties.

“ I had fun being a punch girl,” said Heisler. “Plus, I got home by one in the morning.”

Once the music started, shoes, jackets, vests, and ties were shed and students began dancing the night away. JF Productions returned this year to provide the music again. A video of the dance can be found at jfproductions.biz.

“ The prom dance was awesome. It was probably the best dance that we have had. The DJ was great,” said Lynsee Wilson, sr. “It was a great end to the senior year.”

The dance ended at 11:30 p.m., and students were given 30 minutes to change for after prom. At midnight, students were fed pizza and pop before they began their activities. After everyone had eaten their fill, students loaded buses for Iola.

“ Pizza was great,” said Samantha Kerns, jr. “I would just like to say thanks to all those that made it for us.”

Students divided into two groups for after prom. One group went to the movie while the other group bowled. After about two hours, the groups switched. The students arrived back in Humboldt at about 5:30 in the morning to hand out prizes before heading home.

“ I had a great time at after prom, but I would have liked it to be a little shorter and more organized during the prize drawing,” said Vici Corban, sr.

No matter if students were blinded by camera flashes, dead tired after all the activities, or did not like part of the night, prom is finished for another year, and students had the opportunity to make several lasting memories from one night with friends and dates.
