BOE hears good preliminary results
on state assessments
By Katie Hauser, jr.
Opinion Editor
After roll call and the adoption of the agenda of April 10,
the Board of Education recognized Mark Warren for 25 years of service to
education with a plaque.
The consent agenda was passed. Board members discussed attending the regional
KASB meeting at Altoona-Midway.
Bob Heigele, superintendent, told the Board about his concerns about the
Custom Energy contract. He said he was trying to make sure there was no design
duplication and told the Board the budget needs to be completely sorted out
soon. The Board also discussed the bids that Custom Energy had chosen, but
decided to go ahead with the ground source heat pump as long as Heigele kept
track of it.
Kay Bolt, elementary school principal, said that the state assessments went
well and preliminary scores looked good, although the school will not know
cut scores until September. She reported that the new pick up order was working.
She also told Board members of several upcoming dates.
K.B. Criss, middle and high school principal, said that he was confident
the school will do well on state assessments. He told the Board about upcoming
dates for the middle and high school. He also told the Board that he was
going to try to work on new policies for extracurricular activities so that
the Board can approve the changes.
Heigele told the Board that the dirt and grading package would be delayed
because they lost time when the outcome of the closing of the street was
unknown. He also said that a weather station for Channel 7 had been set up
at the middle school.
Board members went into executive session to discuss non-elected personnel
and negotiations. After the meeting reconvened, the Board approved high school
and middle school staff as listed, as well as the elementary school staff.
A half-time At-Risk teacher was approved subject to At-Risk fund availability.
