Boe looks to future

Board of Education members looked to the next school year at their March 13 meeting.

Contract extensions were approved for all building principals and the superintendent. Contracts are for one year at the current salary. Any adjustments will be decided after the Board knows more about funding.

A new inter-local agreement for the ANW Cooperative was approved by the Board. All districts involved in the cooperative must approve the agreement. The main reason for the new agreement is so a new school district can be added.

A 2006 to 2007 school calendar with break and conference dates was presented to the Board and was approved tentatively.

The Board decided to give the after-prom party a bus. Fuel and a bus driver may be donated by the Board as well, depending on how the budget works out by April. They also approved the use of a bus for Civil War tours, but the Board will not fund the fuel or the driver.

Kay Bolt, elementary school principal, said that 92 percent of the parents showed up for parent-teacher conferences. She announced that dial screenings will be open for younger children.

K.B. Criss, high and middle school principal, told the Board that 60 percent of middle school parents and 51 percent of high school parents attended conferences. He also announced that seniors Melanie Weilert, Erica Greve, and Owen Heisler were named all-league scholars.

Bob Heigele, superintendent, announced that the city had voted to close New York street for the new community field house. He said that he was going to have a meeting with all the involved companies to set up a chain of command on the project order. He told the Board that the schools will be cleaned over spring break. He also stated that he was not sure how school funding issues will work at the state legislature and that he believed another special session of the legislature may be needed.

Conferences allow parents, teachers to converse

Parent-teacher conferences were held at all of the district schools on March 9 from 5 to 8 p.m. and on March 10 from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m.

Conferences were carried out differently at the high school this semester, with teachers in their own classrooms instead of being located in the auditorium, as in the past.

In the elementary school, 91 percent of parents attended the conferences overall.

At the middle school, on March 9, 41 parents showed up for the conferences and on March 10, 17 parents attended.

“ Conferences were successful for those that showed up, although there are always fewer parents showing up in spring than in fall. I appreciate all of the parents that did come in to visit. I feel that we have a great student body and great parental support in our school system,” said Mary Durand, middle school mathematics teacher.

For both days at the high school, there was a total of 50.5 percent of parents that showed up for the conferences.

Positive feedback on the new format for high school conferences was common among teachers.

“ I am always glad to see the parents when it comes to conferences, because I get a chance to talk to the parents,” said Sheryl Palmer, business education teacher. “It was even better having the conferences in our own rooms than in the auditorium, because I had an opportunity to show the students’ parents their power points and other assignments that were on the computers.”

Middle School students, as well as elementary school students traveled to the Bowlus Fine Arts Center in Iola to compete against kids from the surrounding areas for the Allen County Spelling Bee.The spelling bee was held on February 15 in front of a public audience.

Four students from Humboldt Middle School were in attendance for the event. Eigth graders Chris Coronado, Jacki Huse, Alexis Hosack and Keifer Rutledge traveled to the spelling bee.

Four Humboldt Elementary School students also attended. Kolbyn Allen, Alex Murrow, Shayli Ellis, and Caleb Vanatta, all fifth graders, were the elementary students who traveled to the competition. Rutledge and Vanatta attended as alternates.

All students were able to attend the spelling bee after placing first through fourth in Humboldt’s school-wide contest on January 25.

Ruby Crawford, language arts instructor, pronounced the words during the middle school spelling bee at home. Crawford was also involved in the Allen County Spelling Bee.

Crawford attended the competition and served as a judge who was authorized to determine whether or not the contestants spelled their words right.

The students competing in the spelling bee received a spelling bee pin to wear while attending the competition.

Out of the three Humboldt middle school students in the competition, Hosack received third place in the county. Hosack misspelled the word ‘limousine,’ which eliminated her from the competition.

“ I was proud of myself for placing third; I was also kind of disappointed because I misspelled ‘limousine’,” said Hosack.
