great. We need to shoot a better percentage from the free-throw line, because
we only shot 40 percent,” said Jeremy Weilert, coach.
The A-team’s final score was a one-point loss of 42-43 against the Wildcats.
The leading scorers for the A-team were Bryce Smith, eighth, with ten points,

All seniors are required to sell 40 tickets each, with the option to sell
more in order to cancel out their class dues. Once students sell their quota,
they need to return all money to the office and ticket stubs to Melanie Weilert,
sr., class president, by February 17. Order forms and raffle tickets may be
obtained from any senior by either contacting them individually or calling
the high school office.
The raffle is scheduled to take place on February 20 at the high school, with
students selling tickets up until February 17. Apparel, however, will be sold

go directly to the senior class to benefit their pending class trip and future

An all-school spelling bee for the Humboldt Middle School was
held on January 25. Competing in the contest were 28 students, including 11
sixth graders, nine seventh graders, and eight eighth graders.
Ruby Crawford pronounced all of the words used at the spelling bee while Susie
Wichman, Jeremy Weilert , and Mary Durand were the judges of the contest.
Chris Coronado, eighth, took first place in the middle school spelling bee.
Coronado won by correctly spelling the word ‘buccaneer.’ However,
Coronado still had to spell the championship word, ‘causeway,’
to seal the deal.
“I did not think that I would make it through the second round, so when
I won, I was really surprised,” said Coronado.
Alexis Hosack, eighth, received second place, Jacki Huse, sixth, took third,
and Keifer Rutledge, sixth, placed fourth. Hosack and Huse will participate
on the county level along with Coronado, while Rutledge will serve as an alternate.
The Humboldt Elementary School also held a spelling bee. Elementary students
competed against each other to become the school spelling bee champion.
The elementary spelling bee took place on February 3. The only students who
were allowed to participate in the spelling bee were those in the fourth and
fifth grades.
The first place winner was Kolbyn Allen, fourth, followed by Alex Murrow,
fourth, for second place. Shayli Ellis fifth, came in third. The fourth place
winner was Caleb Vanatta, fourth. Murrow and Ellis will accompany Allen at
county level competition, with Vanatta serving as the alternate.
The first, second, and third place winners of the middle and elementary school
will attend the Allen County Spelling Bee to compete against other youths
who were winners within the Allen County area.
The Allen County Spelling Bee will be held on February 15 at 1:30 pm at the
Bowlus Fine Arts Center in Iola and will be open to the public for attendance.
