Humboldt USD 258 is located in Southeast Kansas in Allen County, and sits half way between Iola and Chanute on US 169 Hwy. Humboldt is 50 miles west of Fort Scott, 125 miles east of Wichita, 110 miles southwest of Kansas City, and halfway between KC and Tulsa, OK. Our town has a population of about 2,000.

The district operates a 4-year-old pre-school program, all day kindergarten, 1 - 5 elementary school, 6 - 8 middle school and a comprehensive high school, grades 9 through 12. The total enrollment at U.S.D 258 is 498. There are 226 students in the Elementary School, 111 students in the Middle School, and 161 students at the High School.

The district has achieved AYP in all areas tested since the inception of NCLB. In 2007 the 5th grade, the middle school building and high school building reached the Standard of Excellence. The district has a vocational building where courses in graphic arts, computer technology, building trades and vocational agricultural courses are taught.

The district sponsors a comprehensive extra-curricular program that meets the extra-curricular needs of all students. Humboldt also opened its new Community Field House in the summer of 2007, which has many opportunities for exercise. Patrons and employees can utilize a walking track, cardio room, and weight room.

The City of Humboldt operates the gas, water, sanitation, and trash pickup utilities. Western Resources operates the electrical distribution system and has an office in Humboldt. The city has a highly regarded volunteer fire department and a professional police department with personnel on duty 24-hours a day. A county-subsidized ambulance service also provides 24-hour a day coverage by volunteers.

In addition to many privately-owned small businesses, many residents are employed in agriculture and manufacturing, including the Monarch Cement Company, B & W Custom Truck Beds, Humboldt Industries, Wonder Bread and others.
